This office manages, plans, organizes, directs, supervises the overall operation of the National Museum including scientific and technological activities.

The units that comprise the division are:

Planning Unit

This unit direct and re and review the preparation of macro and micro plans and programs, technological, technical administrative projects of the agency; participates in the formulation of criteria for determining priorities for proposed projects, and studies the existing projects of the agency. It also directs the preparation and submission of reports related to different projects of the agency for monitoring purposes.
 
 
Legal Unit
The unit provides the agency with advice on legal matters. Assists the management in the conduct of administrative investigations and recommends proper actions thereon. It also prepares contracts, agreements, other legal papers and documents of the agency.
 
 
Internal Audit Unit
The Internal Audit Unit assists management to achieve an efficient and effective fiscal administration and performance of agency affairs and function. This unit performs the following functions:

1. Reviews and appraises the internal control system of the agency;

2. Ascertains compliance of the agency's organizational units with existing laws, rules and regulations and established policies, plans and procedures;

3. Ascertains the extent to which assets are accounted for and safeguarded from losses of all kinds;

As more people are attached to the IAS, the following functions shall be included:

4. Ascertains the accuracy and reliability of management data;

5. Evaluates the performance of operating activities;

6. Perform special assignments that superiors may assign from time to time.
 
 

Information Technology Unit
The unit provides technical assistance to the agency through the maintenance of the hardware and software, constructing and upgrading the website, production of CD-ROM on the various museum collections, creation of information systems on the various functions of the agency, building and maintaining networking system, and conducting in-house training in all aspect concerning IT.

Highlights of Accomplishments
 

The Information Technology Unit was established under the Office of the Director to service and support the administrative functions, the educational, scientific and cultural activities by way of cyberspace and other computer related services. This unit handles a broad range of technologies involved in information processing and handling, such  as computer hardware, software, data communications, and office automation.

Recent/On-Going Projects

1. The production of CD-ROM  on the various collections of the NM. Two CD's were finished a) The NM Visual Arts Collection where more than eight hundred fifty (850) pieces from the NM collections was featured. It consists of paintings, sculptures and prints dating from 1850 to the contemporary period. This is the first production of a compact disk on the collection of fine arts in the Philippines. b) A CD on ethnology titled: GLIMPSES - Ethnic Groups of the Philippines, it features various ethnic tribes in the Philippines and ethnological collections associated with the ethnic groups.  This is a joint project with The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), SM Equicom Computers, Inc. and Equitable Cardnetwork, Inc. The two CD's  are  available for sale at the NM Souvenir Shop.

2. The construction of National Museum Web Site. This is one of the major accomplishments of the unit where the National Museum could traverse the global information highway. It contains all information about the National Museum from history, organization to its recent/on-going projects. The site  can  be accessed through the Internet at the following address: http://members.tripod.com/~philmuseum.  The Web Site is a combination of texts and graphics presented in an interactive form. It has a feedback mechanism where those who will access the site will  be able to send e-mail messages to the site's maintainer in response to the contents posted. It has also a web counter to find out how many people accessed the site. The Web developer team is composed of  Ms. Carol Magdaleno, team leader,  Mr. Jerry Tabirao, programmer, Mr. Jimmy Oblena, graphics artists and the IT Committee, content developer.

3. Conducted in-house training on Software applications. The unit also conducted a series of  training programs on different software applications for the National Museum personnel. The first Hands-On Training on Desktop Publishing was held for three days at the Assistant Director's Office. This three-day skill oriented program was designed to provide users with the capability to produce professional-quality management reports, manuals, newsletters, brochures, handouts and other publications using Pagemaker, a desktop publishing application. Eleven (11) NM employees graduated from this training course. The second training conducted by Information Technology Unit is Hands-On Training on Windows 95. A one-day training course held at the Assistant Director's Office focused on the basic features and operations of Windows 95, an operating system. The training was aimed to introduce Windows 95, showed how to do the most common task and pointed out the new features that came with the program. The eight participants were able to explore Windows 95 with more depth and learned the technical aspects of the operating system. The third in a series of training programs was  conducted at the NM Branch, Fort pilar, Zamboanga City on February 17-21, 1998. The training includes hands-on from basic computer use to application software i.e. Windows 95, MS Word, Pagemaker and Excel.

4. The installation and maintenance of computers and networking system. The unit is in-charge of the installation and maintenance of computers within the NM. Aside from the divisions, two units were installed at the San Diego Exhibit in Finance Bldg. for the interactive CD-ROM about the San Diego Exhibit,  another unit at the NM Branch, Fort Pilar, Zamboanga City. The maintenance of networking system through Internet wherein the technical divisions uses for their research needs and for sending/receiving electronic mails.  At present, six divisions are connected to the Internet.
